Updates from Kip and Denise - December 2008
H&S Clients
are Living The Dream – Adélia Sails!
Kip
and Denise had the same dream that many boaters have of moving fulltime
onto their boat and cruising the world; the difference is that they
went for it! They rigged their dream, trimmed it, and were jubilant
when that dream filled with wind and began to sail! Currently Kip
and Denise are aboard “Adelia”, their Jeanneau 49 Deck
Salon, and are cruising their way from the Mexican mainland to the
Galapagos Islands.
Their story began as only a dream the day they boarded their friend
Howard's sailboat (Quan Yin) for a day sail off the Santa Barbara
Coast in August 1999. They were hooked! By November 2001 they had
taken delivery of their first sailboat, a Hunter 37.6 that they
named Merlot. After just over a year of fun aboard Merlot they decided
to upgrade to a Hunter 44 Deck Salon. Denise shares that “we
had many wonderful sailing trips on both of our first sailboats
but decided we needed something a little bigger with a different
interior layout for the extended cruises we were planning.”
Looking back they noted that the first step into turning their dream
of sailing into a reality took place when they sold their home in
Oak View, California. They moved back into a rental they owned in
Ventura, California that they remodeled and sold. They were now
ready to move fulltime onto their sailboat. Click here to read the rest of this story from our March 2007 E-Newsletter

January 27th, 2009: Notes from the first mate:
It's hard to believe were just about a month into 2009. As most of our family and friends are experiencing cool and some very cold weather, here in Australia it's been very hot. Thankfully we are close enough to bike to the beach and take a dip in the ocean. I ride my bike 6 km to Curves every morning and Kip rides about the same distance to a very nice lap pool. We have also taken in a few movies which is something we never had time to do and it's great to sit in an air condition theatre. It's certainly nice to have some sort of a routine, it's something we haven't had in a while and believe or not we miss. We're happy to be able to enjoy this area.
January 12th, 2009: Notes from the first mate:
We just returned from a wonderful trip to Sydney and Parkes NSW where we enjoyed a very well organized and fun Elvis Festival. Those of you who have known me a very long time know that Elvis was and his still my ultimate favorite singer. Enjoy the video Elvis Remembered video and see Elvis come alive in Parkes NSW Australia.
December 18th 2008: Notes from the first mate:
We have settled nicely in Scarborough Marina and it's surroundings. We are thrilled at the amount of bike trails there are and how everything we need is just a bike ride away. The weather is a little hotter than we would like but then again we never seem to happy with the weather no matter where we are. We had a wonderful time with my sister Jeannine and her husband Emile touring parts of Queensland. The wildlife was super as was the country side. We're bummed neither one of us will be home for christmas but we plan on making up for it next christmas. We are having christmas dinner with some friends and will be attending a New Years Eve party at the Morton Bay Boat Club which is within walking distance from Adelia. We hope you all have a wonderful Holiday Season and the best in 2009.
November 12th 2008: Notes from the first mate:
We plan on leaving Mooloolaba Marina on Friday morning and will head to Scarborough Marina where we plan on settling in for a long while. I'm so excited because my sister Jeannine and her husband Emile will join us there for a few weeks. We look forward to doing some touring with them and possible having an early Christmas dinner as they will leave Australia Dec 13th. I can't wait to see them.
Nov 07th 2008: Departure Port: Bundaberg 08:30 Nov 07th, 2008
Port O'call: Mooloolaba Marina 08:30 Nov 8th, 2008
Trip: 210 nm / Wind speeds 0 to 5 / Temp 78 / Water 80
The wind had died down so we left the Bundaberg Marina and some of our new friends and headed towards Mooloolaba Marina before the winds pick up again. We decided to go around Fraser Island instead of going through the pass because of tide and depth restrictions. It worked out in our favor as the wind started blowing hard just a little while after we were settled in our birth. Mooloolaba Marina is located about 40 miles from Scarborough Marina where we plan to keep Adelia for the next six months. Scarborough is about 40 miles north of Brisbane.
October 30th 2008: Notes from the first mate:
It's hard to believe that our second season of cruising has come to an end. It's been a wonderful year and again we have seen so many things, and met so many wonderful people. We joined the Port 2 Port Rally which had 42 boats signed up with some leaving Port Villa, Vanuatu and some leaving New Caledonia en route to Bundaberg Australia. We arrived in Australia and were greeted by the most wonderful Customs Officers who cleared us in without any problems. The following week was filled with parties and events put together by the Port 2 Port Rally Organizers. What a great reception we received from the Port 2 Port Rally Organizers. We spent a little over a week in Bundaberg toured both the Ginger Beer and Bundaberg Rum factories.
Oct 20th 2008: Departure Port: Port Villa, Vanuatu 09:30 Oct 20th, 2008
Port O'call: Bundaberg, Australia 00:30 Oct 27th, 2008
Trip: 1077 nm / Wind speeds 5 to 20 / Temp 82 / Water 84
After studying the weather for a week we finally got our window to leave Vanuatu for Australia. The weather looked good and with our twelve month Australian visas in place it was time to move on. With all the last minute preparations done we left mid morning on Monday the 20th. With brisk winds we made a good distance, 180 miles, in our first 24 hrs. The trip overall was good as the wind clocked around in our favor at every course change. We sailed almost the whole trip with the exception of the last 12 hrs. We pulled into the well lit Bundaberg channel around midnight and made our way safely to the quarantine anchorage along side other boats which were also part of the Port 2 Port rally. We had a very quick passage, it took us six and a half days to cover almost 1100 nm. Safely at anchor we popped a bottle of champagne and celebrated our arrival into Australia.
October 4th 2008: Notes from the first mate:
We've been traveling around Vanuatu Islands for the past few weeks and have totally enjoyed most of the anchorages. We've met a lot of different people, have played doctor and nurse to a wounded local who cut his hand really bad and have been snorkeling on the most beautiful reefs we've ever seen. We've snorkeled more hours in the past month than ever and have seen many many varieties of beautiful fish. I am so excited I've been learning to dive under water to get closer to the fish like this one, something I never dreamed I could ever do. I love it and I'm addicted to trying to get deeper. We really love Vanuatu and want to see more of it so we will be coming back next year.
Sept 20th 2008: Departure Port: Peterson Bay, 06:45 Sept 20th, 2008
Port O'call: Aore Resort to Maulo, Malekula Island 12:00 Sept 20th, 2008
Trip: 28 nm / Wind speeds 5 to 10 / Temp 84 / Water 88
We have never seen current like the kind that goes through the channel leaving Aore Resort on Espiritu Santo. Our timing was good to get out with the tide but as we got towards the open sea we saw waves that looked like a river rolling into the sea. It looked a lot worse that it was but we did hit speeds of over 9 kts going through the passage out. The passage to Maulo Anchorage on Malekula was rough and uncomfortable but we found Maulo anchorage to be calm as we were greeted by several canoes.
Sept 12th 2008: Departure Port: Vanihe Bay, Ambae Island 03:00 Sept 12th, 2008
Port O'call: Peterson Bay, Espiritu Santo 10:30 Sept 12th, 2008
Trip: 47.4 nm/ Wind speeds 3 to 10 / Temp 82 / Water 86
Our one night stop in Vanihe Bay was very uncomfortable, rolly anchorage. Since we were getting little or no sleep we pulled up anchor around 03:00 just a few minutes after Special Blend and headed to Espiritu Santo. The passage was dull, no wind, we dropped anchor in the outer part of the bay and waited a few hours for the tide to come up so we could make our way through a marked pass between the reefs. Inside of the bay we dropped the anchor in 7 meters close to the Oyster Island Resort where we found internet and cold beer.
Sept 9th 2008: Notes from the first mate:
After a night stay in Ranon bay we made our way towards the big Island of Espiritu Santo with one stop on Pentecost and Maewo Islands. I must admit black sand beaches are certainly not my favorite, the black sand gets everywhere. There is a yacht club in Asanvari Bay with no cold beer but the best snorkeling and the most picturesque bay so far. We found a narrow passage along the shore which leads you into an open cave where the water is extremely clear and the fish are wonderful. With Kip's help I've started diving down in the water to get close up pictures of the fish. I'm loving it, it's my new addiction. Check this one out. Kip and Jim on Special Blend went out fishing early one morning a caught a 40 lb wahoo but had a huge marlin on just before. After a morning snorkeling we left for Vanihe Bay Ambea Island.
Sept 6th 2008: Departure Port: Banam Bay, Malekula Island 07:45 Sept 6th, 2008
Port O'call: Ranon Ambrym Island 11:45 Sept 6th, 2008
Trip: 20 nm/ Wind speeds 0 to 20 / Temp 82 / Water 86
We sailed on a close reach for a while but as we rounded the north end of Ambrym, the wind died so we motored the rest of the way. We dropped anchor in 4 meters on black sand and were met by the local Harbor Master and Tourism Director Jeffery who came out to greet us in is dugout canoe.
Mike Harker - Circumnavigatin the Globe
Mike has bought a few boats from us. In a Hunter 46 he purchased from us, he crossed the Pacific twice and the Atlantic twice. He sold his Hunter 46 and stepped up to a Hunter 49 in which he circumnavigated the globe in only 12 months. But there is alot more to his story than just that. Mike is also paralyzed below the knee, but that doesn''t slow him down.
You can view his video here!
You can read more about his incredible story at:

Terry and Michelle on Coastal Passage II
Many of you may have met Terry before. He is one of our skippers and has also been at our sailboat rendezvous events at Catalina. You may have even read their liveaboard story in San Diego Magazine. An incredibly nice couple who are living the dream, sailing on the Pacific coast and currently in Mexico. Here are some updates from their trip.
May 28, 2008 - Hello to all from Nuevo Vallarta. Coastal Passage has found a home during hurricane season in Paradise Village Marina, Nuevo Vallarta.
We have visited many wonderful locations through out Mexico during the last seven months. Lush tropical anchorages along the Mexico mainland and areas in the Sea Of Cortez that are dry and barren, reminiscent of the Grand Canyon. Coastal Passage performed very well sailing and providing comfort while at anchor. Problems with the systems were few and usually caused by operator error. The experience has been wonderful as well as the many people we have met along the way.
We look forward to our visit to San Diego in June and visiting with family as well as friends. We will return to Mexico towards the end of July.
Doing necessary maintenance projects and enjoying the area in a very hot and high humidity paradise.

May 6, 2008 - Hola,
Hello to everyone from the Sea Of Cortez. We are currently on a mooring in Puerto Escondido, which is just a few miles south of Loreto. Loreto Fest kicks off on May 1 and runs through May 4. It is put on by the Hidden Bay Yacht Club. There are games (bocci ball, over the line, horseshoes, dominoes, card games) food (pancake breakfast, hot dogs, spaghetti dinner and a BBQ put on by a local mexican family). About seventy to ninety boats are here for this event. This is probably as far north into the Sea Of Cortez that we will go this year before we start our journey back south to Paradise Village Marina in Nuevo Vallarta (next to Puerto Vallarta) where we will keep the boat during Hurricane season. We have seen many beautiful places on the Mexican Mainland as well as in the Sea Of Cortez and the friendly local people of the villages have made this cruising season something to remember. We have made many friends along the way and look forward to staying in touch and seeing them in anchorages in the future. We plan to be in Paradise Village Marina in Nuevo Vallarta by June 1st. Michelle will fly to San Diego on June 7th and I will be bringing a power boat up to San Diego departing P.V. June 8th and being in San Diego hopefully by June 15th (weather permitting). We will be in San Diego for about a month and then return to Mexico to do maintenance and a few projects on Coastal Passage. Yes we do have air conditioning aboard, as it gets quite warm with high humidity during the summer months down here. We look forward to visiting with family and friends during our stay in San Diego.
